Sally Zakariya has been writing for as long as she
can remember—poems, short stories, magazine articles, and academic
reports. Born in 1942 in Washington, D.C., she followed a predictable
word-lover’s path, serving as editor of her high school literary
magazine and earning a B.A. in English literature from Swarthmore
College. But short of writing the Great American Novel,
what’s an English major to do? Zakariya opted for graduate courses at
George Washington University, then found a career as a magazine writer
and editor in the Washington area, writing on a variety of topics, from
education to art and architecture, health and nutrition, and personal
enrichment. Since retiring from full-time work, Zakariya has
continued writing and editing as a freelancer. She has also studied
publication design and turned out self-published illustrated alphabet
books on food, literature, and anatomy.
Arithmetic
is her first
poetry collection. She and her husband, calligrapher and artist
Mohamed Zakariya, have one son and now live in Arlington, Virginia, with
their cats Monty and Tony.
