Sets One and Two of the Single Sound System of Teaching Someone to Read

The success to teaching anyone to read is to teach one sound at a time. Our Phonics Readers practice the student in one vowel sound at a time. When the student masters one sound at a time, he or she can easily learn to read without overwhelm or confusion. In Set One, the short sound vowel of the letter "a" is practiced. It is surrounded by a number of consonants so the student gets used to its sound with the various consonants and even covers plural words containing the short "a" word. This is done at a pace which allows your student to learn this sound so thoroughly, he or she will never have a problem with it again. The stories and illustrations guarantee engaging interest and allow the reader to participate in the learning process.

Once your student has mastered the short sounds of the "a" vowels and has read, on his or her own, five full books, it is time to teach him or her the remaining short vowel sounds. Set Two covers the short sounds of "e," "i," "o," and "u." After reading the books in this set, if these vowels have been taught and practiced well, your student will have mastered the most difficult aspects of learning to read - the short vowel sounds. I have tried all of these readers with many emergent readers with Success and Great Success, but no less than that. They love the funny and colorful pictures which help to lead them to read the text. They really enjoy the experience and want to show it to everyone! Heart laughter accompanies exploration of the books. I think that even the non-English speakers catch on faster because of these pictures. They feel such a sense of accomplishment when they finish each book, but are not exhausted by the effort.
